High-quality home audio doesn’t have to break the bank. As proof, we’d like to introduce you to the new SP-BS22-LR compact speakers from Pioneer.

70 Years of Audio Firsts

These speakers come with a remarkable pedigree of over 70 years of Pioneer audio heritage and industry firsts. Like every speaker we build, these are engineered to offer incredible design and amazing sound quality. But then that’s exactly what you’d expect from speakers designed by internationally renowned speaker engineer, Andrew Jones. As Pioneer’s Chief Speaker Engineer, Andrew has designed some of the world’s finest loudspeakers, some costing as much as $80,000. Now he has brought his high-end expertise and passion to the creation of this affordable compact speaker. And while the price is considerably lower than some of his other efforts, the expectation and delivery of accurate sound reproduction are the same.

Thinking Out Of the Box

Typically you’ll find most compact speakers not only come in a box, but they are also a box. And while that might be better for production costs, it isn’t better for sound reproduction. The SP-BS22-LR speakers utilize a true curved cabinet design. So besides the aesthetics being considerably more pleasing, this stiffer design reduces standing sound waves inside the cabinet, resulting in high-performance and exceptional sound quality.

As you look at them, you’ll also notice our unique speaker grills. They’re beautiful and elegant in their own right, but not for their own sake. They protect the speakers but are also removable if you prefer to see the drivers themselves.

The Inside Story

Crossover: The job of the cross over in a speaker is to break the audio signal into low, high and sometimes mid-range frequencies. It’s an important job, and it uses circuitry like inductors and capacitors to accomplish it. Much of the competition uses an extremely simple, low-cost cross over made up of a single capacitor and inductor. The Pioneer SP-BS22-LR utilizes a sophisticated 6 component high-quality cross over. The reasoning is simple: we do it because it’s one more way of ensuring high-quality sound that makes its presence known.

Great sounding speakers, with clean sharp sound with decent bass

Hits the ball out of the stadium — that too, for Rs.13,000! Built like a rock, very musical bass naturally very limited with steep fall off. Maybe a sub?

With a name like Andrew Jones behind, I reckon these speakers had a reputation to live up to, and yeah – they do live up to the hype – considering the price.

I was looking for a pair of budget floorstanding (Speaker A) + bookshelf (Speaker B) speakers to go with an entry-level Yamaha amp (R-N303), and since the Pioneer FS-52s are so hard to come by these days, went with a pair of Yamaha NS-F160s as floorstanders, and these BS-22s as bookshelves.

I’ve run them in for about a month now, what I love about these modestly priced BS-22s are how easy-to-listen and non-fatiguing they are.

People say Yamaha amps are generally on the brighter side, and I always had to dial down the treble a few notches when using it with the FS-160s; but these Pioneers are quite relaxed and relatively warm, so they pair really well with “brighter” amps like Yamahas.

They are perfect for my Speaker B (night listening) needs, and even after all these years – are still probably the best budget, musical bookshelves for the price!

Very keen to check out how they fare against some of the relatively more premium, entry-level heavyweights like the Mission LX-2s, or for that matter, even the Wharfedale Diamond 220s or 11.1s!

Hopefully sometime soon if Anil @ HiFiMART comes up with some good offers 🙂

Hifimart shipping and delivery experience was unbeatable. Thanks guys. The speakers are superb for the price. I actually bought them to be used as Atmos speakers, however have been running them as the primary left and right speakers for the past month to break them in. I am extremely happy with the product. Fit, finish & sound is phenomenal for the price.
