Wharfedale

Wharfedale EVO 5.1 Bookshelf Speaker (Pair)

The most compact in the EVO 5 line, the Wharfedale EVO 5.1 Bookshelf Speaker packs surprising punch from its 5.1-inch Kevlar woofer and refined AMT tweeter. Its tri-directional SLPP port keeps bass tight and musical even in tight spaces, making it ideal for desktop listening or small-room two-channel systems and equally effective as satellite speakers in a home cinema setup.

The EVO 5 builds on the success of the EVO 4, which received great reviews and became one of Wharfedale’s top-selling products. The EVO 5 introduces several key upgrades, including a larger AMT tweeter, a tri-directional SLPP bass port, improved Kevlar woofers with elastomer damping, and a sturdier, multi-layer real-wood cabinet featuring precision spot bracing. Co-developed with the Elysian series, the EVO 5 retains the natural and musical British sound while offering deeper bass, more precise sound, and reduced distortion—all at an affordable price.

High-End Sound, Everyday Price
The Wharfedale EVO 5.1 Bookshelf Speaker are the next evolution in affordable audiophile-grade speakers. It shares advanced technology, accurate sound, and high-quality construction with Wharfedale’s Elysian series, along with specific enhancements, yet remains easily accessible. The classic British sound—natural, musical, and appealing—stands out with precise details that rival those of speakers costing much more.

Precision AMT Tweeter
EVO 5’s Air Motion Transformer tweeter features an expanded 35 × 70 mm pleated diaphragm driven by precision magnets, now enhanced with acoustic damping and an elastomer frame. The result is faster transients, wider dispersion, and ultra-low distortion—delivering crisp, extended treble without harshness or fatigue.

The AMT unit developed for EVO 5 is larger than the EVO 4 equivalent – 35x70mm compared to 30x60mm – which further improves efficiency and dispersion. It also features a new sound-absorbing material that Wharfedale calls SilentWeave™ – developed for the EVO 5 Series, this cotton/felt hybrid is added to the cavity behind the diaphragm to reduce soundwave reflections inside the speaker.

All the EVO 5 drive units benefit from a new acoustic damping frame called ResoFrame™, made from elastomer and visible as a cog-like shape within the driver’s front panel. In the case of the AMT, an additional elastomer damping gasket between the diaphragm and the front plate further reduces mechanical resonances. It smooths the response, especially in the critical lower treble band.

These acoustic enhancements to the AMT unit minimise unwanted sound colouration, ensuring crisply extended treble without a hint of harshness and a purer, more natural sonic signature.

A Distinctive Approach to High Frequencies

AMT Tweeter for Precision and Detail: In developing the new EVO 5 series, Wharfedale has further evolved the cutting-edge Air Motion Transformer (AMT). The AMT is a type of high-frequency driver used in speakers, known for its exceptional accuracy, speed, and low distortion compared to traditional dome treble units.

Instead of using a conventional dome or cone to push air forward, an AMT uses a pleated diaphragm made of an ultra-thin, lightweight material (often a polymer film). Strong magnets are positioned on either side of the diaphragm, creating a powerful magnetic field. When an audio signal is passed through the conductive traces, the diaphragm is energised, causing the pleats to contract and expand. As the pleats move, they “squeeze” and “expand” the air between them, pushing it out in a highly controlled and effcient manner. This method allows the AMT to move four times more air than a traditional dome tweeter of the same surface area, leading to lower distortion (since the diaphragm moves less than a typical dome or ribbon), faster transient response (due to the lightweight material and minimal movement), wider frequency range and better dispersion.

Controlled Kevlar Bass Drivers
Building on Elysian’s low-distortion motor system, EVO 5 woofers use woven Kevlar cones (130 mm or 150 mm, depending on model) with low-loss rubber surrounds and rear elastomer damping. The stiff, well-damped cones ensure ideal piston motion and a seamless blend with the midrange, producing bass that’s weighty, articulate, and true to the music.

Refined SLPP Bass Port
Wharfedale’s Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP) is now a tri-directional design, venting rear radiation left, right, and rear through flared, semi-parabolic flanges. By equalising high internal pressure to room pressure without turbulence, EVO 5 delivers deep, articulate bass free from port noise, and is far less sensitive to placement.

Resonance-Free Real-Wood Cabinets
EVO 5 cabinets employ a sandwich of high-loss chipboard between stiff MDF layers to cancel resonances, aided by computer-modelled spot bracing that ties opposite walls.

Clean Connections
A single set of high-quality 5-way binding posts provides a secure and reliable connection, keeping cables neatly organised. Straight terminals simplify hookup and ensure a tidy, uncluttered appearance behind your speakers.

Seamless Home Cinema Integration
For a complete surround system, EVO 5 models share tweeters, driver cones, and crossover topology across the range. The matched tonal balance ensures coherent imaging and consistent performance in every channel—so your home cinema sounds as refined as your stereo system.

2 reviews for Wharfedale EVO 5.1 Bookshelf Speaker (Pair)

  1. Anandveer Chakravarthy

Here’s a first-hand review of living with the Wharfedale EVO 5.1 bookshelf speakers after about 15 days of regular listening in a modest room.

    Setup & First Impressions

I paired them with a mid-power solid state amplifier (Audiolab 7000A) and placed them on decent stands, about 6-7 feet apart, roughly ear height when seated, with modest room damping.

The finish is in walnut veneer, which immediately gives a premium feel. They look solid and well built right out of the box.

    Sound Quality

    Mid-range

This is the star of the show. Vocals—male and female—come through with surprising clarity, presence, and warmth. On acoustic guitar tracks or piano, you can really hear the body of the instrument, the wood, the overtones. There’s no hollow or thin sound. Instruments like saxophones, clarinets, and mid-range synths sound very convincing.

Sometimes, with more modest bookshelf speakers I’ve owned, you lose nuance in the 800 Hz-3 kHz region; not so here. The EVO 5.1 keeps detail, even at moderate volume, without sounding fatigued.

    Highs (Treble / Airy Detail)

The AMT tweeter delivers airy, open highs. Cymbals have clean shimmer, hi-hats have bite but aren’t harsh. Small ambient cues—room reverb, soft percussion, string harmonics—are well preserved. Gentle highs are resolved; harshness only creeps in if I push volume really hard or use very bright source recordings.

The extension seems good; there’s a sense of spaciousness, especially when listening to well‐recorded orchestral or classical pieces, jazz with horns and brushes, etc.

Bass (Low End) for Its Size

For bookshelf speakers, the bass is very respectable. The 5-inch Kevlar woofer, combined with the porting (SLPP port design), gives enough depth to make bass guitar, kick drums, and electronic bass lines not just detectable but reasonably satisfying.

Of course, they won’t rattle your windows like a floor-standing speaker or a dedicated subwoofer, but there’s enough punch and body so the music feels full. Tracks with deep bass still show their character, though the very lowest sub-sonics are beyond them.

Interestingly, the bass is relatively tight—less boom, more controlled. Placement matters: a bit of distance from the back wall helps, and having a sound stand/footing improves clarity in the low-mid/bass region.

    Build Quality & Physical Impressions

The cabinets feel very solid—no creaks or flexing when I press on them. The plinth (base) is a hybrid metal/wood, which adds to stability.

The finish is clean, edges add nicely, grille fits well. The internal bracing and materials seem uptown (for this price bracket).

One thing that stands out: weight. At about 8 kg per speaker, these are not light. Moving them requires effort, especially when positioning. It shows that Wharfedale has used substantial cabinet materials, and that heft helps with damping unwanted vibrations. It’s reassuring – you feel the build when you lift them.

After 15 days, I can say the Wharfedale EVO 5.1 delivers exceptional mid-range realism, airy and clean highs, and substantial bass for a bookshelf speaker. The build is top notch, and the weight is an indication of serious design (not just looks). For someone who values vocals, acoustic instruments, jazz, small ensemble classical, or well-produced pop/rock, these are a very good option in this amazing price.

  2. Percy C

I’ve been using the Wharfedale EVO 5.1 in walnut finish for about a month now, and it’s been an absolute joy to listen to. I’ve paired it with the Audiolab 6000A MkII, and the combination sounds simply fantastic.

The EVO 5.1 has a very musical and natural sound. The midrange is rich and expressive — vocals sound lifelike, and instruments like guitars and pianos have a lovely warmth and texture. The AMT tweeter gives the highs a wonderful sense of air and detail, making the sound open, spacious, and effortless, without any harshness.

What I really love is how everything blends together so smoothly. It’s the kind of speaker you can listen to for hours without fatigue, and it makes every track sound engaging and emotional.

Even though it’s priced around ₹70,000, this is definitely a high-end speaker. It needs a capable amplifier to truly shine. I actually tried it with some budget amps from Marantz and Denon (which I borrowed from a friend), and while they sounded decent, they didn’t bring out the full potential of the EVO 5.1. When paired with the Audiolab 6000A MkII, however, the difference was night and day — the sound opened up beautifully, with much better dynamics, clarity, and control.

If you’re planning to buy this speaker, make sure to pair it with a good amplifier — something in the class of the Audiolab 6000A MkII or better — to really experience what it’s capable of.

In short, the Wharfedale EVO 5.1 and Audiolab 6000A MkII are a perfect match. This setup delivers rich, detailed, and truly musical sound that makes you want to go through your entire music collection all over again.
