Marantz had some big shoes to fill when they named their new compact stereo amp after the legendary Model One and I must truly applaud them on the M1.
I’d first heard them in Tokyo powering a pair of B&W 705 S3 signatures and instantly fell in love with the presentation which was brimming with character while driving demanding speakers. I’d almost picked it up when I reasoned with myself that our friendly neighborhood Hifimart would be a better bet for after sales peace of mind.
Got the M1 immediately upon reaching these shores and while I don’t have any B&Ws, i put posed a tougher challenge with more demanding speakers in the Spendor Classic 2/3 and Tannoy Definition DC8 – feed these speakers ordinary amplification and you’ll get a rather lacklustre and underwhelming performance.
Not with the M1 however – the first thing that struck me when powering the abovementioned speakers was the transparency, refinement and detail in the midrange – you can hear deep into the singers voice and track every nuance without the presentation being thin or glassy as is typical of some class D amps. The M1 also impresses with the highs as it loses none of the sparkle and attack while maintaining incredible treble refinement. The only common characteristic it shares with other class D amps is the incredible bass control they typically exhibit.
How does the M1 compare to my other Class D amps such as the Crown XLS1502, SMSL DA9, 2 x Fosi ZA3 Monoblocks? Well, they are nowhere in the same ballpark SQ wise and as soon as you turn up the decibels, it becomes evident that their power ratings are hugely exaggerated. Only the Crown comes close to the M1 when it comes to bass control.
How does it compare to my Cambridge Audio CXA81 and Willsenton R8? All amps have their own strengths and weaknesses. The CXA81 has a big, bold, and rich presentation with a layered soundstage which trades some transparency and refinement as well as control in the bass to achieve the aforementioned presentation. The Willsenton R8 is a whole other kettle of fish presentation wise with a warm sound that permeates throughout all the frequencies but the treble is rolled off and the bass is nowhere as strong or controlled, not to mention it can’t go loud and sounds lacklustre with warm speakers such as the Spendor and Tannoys. The M1’s stands out in this bunch with its mid-range transparency, top notch treble refinement and bass definition and control.
Suffice to say I’m pleased as a punch that i’ve finally found the perfect small form factor amp that sounds great with higher end speakers.

The Model M1 really brings the audio to life. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but for those who value high-end sound performance, it’s well worth the investment. It delivers superb sound quality with a remarkable sense of clarity and warmth. As someone who’s been using it for a while with my Bowers & Wilkins CM 5 speakers, I can confidently say it takes the speakers to another level of performance.

From the moment I powered it on, the combination delivered an impressive balance of clarity, warmth, and depth. The M1 brings out the best in the Lintons, giving them a smooth, natural sound with a rich midrange and detailed highs, while the bass is full without becoming overpowering. The pairing handles everything from subtle details to complex dynamics with ease. Overall, this setup provides an excellent synergy that elevates my listening experience.

An absolute GEM!
The Marantz Model M1 delivers phenomenal sound quality—crystal clear highs, rich mids, and deep, well-controlled bass. Despite being a Class D amplifier, it doesn’t sound like one at all; the warmth and natural tonality are truly impressive. The soundstage is wide, with excellent instrument separation and detail. It effortlessly drives my Dynaudio Contour bookshelf speakers, delivering ample power and control. Even at lower volumes, the clarity and depth remain outstanding. It’s a must-have for those seeking a network amplifier under one Lakh.

Marantz has achieved something truly extraordinary with this amp. It is filled to the brim with power and there is no sign of class D or any listening fatigue. In a blind test it will be very difficult to say if it’s class AB or D. The presentation is enormous and the imaging spot on. It drives my difficult to drive KEF LS Meta speakers with ease and lot of enthusiasm. Goes well with all genre of music. Highly recommended.

After talking to Anil for a replacement of my old PM8006, I recently got my hands on the Marantz Model M1 Amplifier at a special offer price and it has completely transformed my listening experience. Right out of the box, the design feels premium—sleek, compact, and well-built. Setting it up was straightforward, and it easily integrated into my existing system. Whether streaming music or playing high-resolution audio files, this amp delivers a clean, detailed, and powerful sound that exceeded my expectations.
Compared to the Marantz PM8006, the Model M1 feels like a more modern take on Marantz amplification. The PM8006 has a more traditional analog sound signature, with a warmer tone and slightly rounded top end with limited detail. On the other hand, the Model M1 has a cleaner, more neutral sound with excellent clarity and digital integration. It’s also much more compact and energy-efficient, making it a better fit for those who want high-end audio without the bulk of a traditional integrated amplifier. If you love the Marantz sound but want something more modern with streaming capabilities, the Model M1 is a fantastic choice.
The sound quality is where the Model M1 truly shines. It produces clear highs, rich mids, and a tight, punchy bass without distortion, even at higher volumes. It handles various music genres beautifully, from jazz and classical to rock and electronic. The built-in streaming capabilities are a great addition, allowing seamless access to my favorite music services. Plus, it stays cool even after hours of use, which speaks to its efficient design.
